Rhinoplasty

A rhinoplasty is a surgery performed on the nose, most commonly called a ‘nose job’. Rhinoplasty may correct the following concerns.

  • Nasal obstructions
  • Large and disproportionate nose
  • Bulbous nose tip
  • Flat nose
  • Crooked nose
  • Upturned nose
  • Stubby nose
  • Wide or flared nostrils

Types of rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty procedures vary depending on the problems being addressed. These procedures may be surgical or non-surgical.

Surgical

There are two main kinds of surgeries that are done on noses.

  • Functional rhinoplasty  is done to improve the functions of the nose, for example, when the airway may be blocked due to an injury or a deviated septum.
  • Cosmetic or aesthetic rhinoplasty  is done to change the shape of the nose, for example, when the person feels that their nose is too long or short, too big or small, remove bumps, change the shape of the tip of the nose and so on.

There are predominantly two types of aesthetic rhinoplasty—augmentation rhinoplasty and reduction rhinoplasty.

Augmentation rhinoplasty

Reduction rhinoplasty

Non-surgical

In some cases, a non-surgical option can be taken to fix the nose. For example, fillers such as Hyaluronic Acid (HA) and Micro Fat Grafts (MFG) are used to correct minor deformities. This has reduced the healing time and is done as an out-patient procedure. This is otherwise called liquid rhinoplasty.

Indian Rhinoplasty

Although many kinds of noses are found in Indians, they generally fall under three main types.

Aryan/Persian

This kind of nose is due to the genes brought into India by the movement of people to India from Persia and the Middle East. This nose is characteristically tall and slender, mostly with a hump. Most of the patients with an Aryan/Persian nose will require a reduction rhinoplasty.

Dravidian/Caucasian

This kind of nose has a mix of African and Caucasian characteristics. This nose is generally described as being short and stubby. Most patients with a South Indian nose might have an augmentation rhinoplasty done to make the nose taller and longer.

North-eastern/Oriental

This kind of nose is due to the influx of people from South-east Asia, predominantly seen in the North-eastern parts of India. This nose is short with upturned nostrils. Most patients with an Oriental nose will want the height of the nose to be increased and the tip to be turned down so that the nostrils are not visible from the front.
